Nebraska Legislative Bill 742 established the Nebraska Public Adjusters Licensing Act and changed licensing laws in the state for public adjusters. The Act, which became law in 2018, states that anyone who wishes to become a public adjuster must have a specific public adjuster license. Prior to the Act, anyone with a Nebraska Insurance Consultant license could also act as a public adjuster.

A part of the licensing process includes obtaining a $20,000 surety bond.

Licensed and Bonded

Public adjuster license applicants must apply with the Director of the Nebraska Department of Insurance. Licensing requirements include:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have principal residence or place of business in Nebraska
  • Has not committed an act that is grounds for denial
  • Pay $50 application fee
  • Pass examination
  • Good character
  • Has an office in the state with public access by appointment or regular business hours
  • Completed uniform public adjuster license application
  • Submit a $20,000 surety bond

With renewals, public adjusters must complete 24 hours of continuing education, including three hours of ethics.
