What Are Alabama Requirements for Lost Certificates of Title?

A Certificate of Title is necessary when the original title can’t be found or it was destroyed. A Certificate of Title Surety Bond is your guarantee that you are the true owner of a vehicle that does not have a title.

The Alabama Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division, Title Section is responsible for the issuing titles for new, used and lost or destroyed titles for trailers, motorized passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, trucks, buses, recreational vehicles, motorcycles and manufactured homes.

The Code of Alabama 1975, Title 32, Chapter 8, Article 36 provides the requirements for the issuing of titles which includes:

1. Completion of the Certificate of Title Bond Application

2. Completion of the Affidavit Supporting the Certificate of Title Bond Application


3. Obtain a surety bond from SuretyGroup.com for the applicable amount:

Trailers

a. Less than five (5) model years old- $25,000 bond

b. Five (5) model years old but less than ten (10) model years old $25,000 bond

c. Ten (10) or more model years old $5,000 bond

Passenger Vehicles and Pickup Trucks

a. Less than five (5) model years old- $50,000 bond

b. Five (5) model years old but less than ten (10) model years old $25,000 bond

c. Ten (10) or more model years old $10,000 bond

Trucks, Buses and Recreational Vehicles

a. Less than five (5) model years old- $100,000 bond

b. Five (5) model years old but less than ten (10) model years old $50,000 bond

c. Ten (10) or more model years old $25,000 bond

Motorcycles

a. Less than five (5) model years old- $25,000 bond

b. Five (5) model years old but less than ten (10) model years old $10,000 bond

c. Ten (10) or more model years old $5,000 bond

Manufactured Homes

a. Less than ten (10) model years old $50,000 bond

b. Ten (10) or more model years old $25,000 bond

4. The bond remains in effect for 3 years from issue date

5. Exemptions:

a. Trailers, manufactured homes, semi-trailer, travel trailer, folding or collapsible camping trailers more than twenty (20) years old are exempt from titling (as of January 1, 2012).

b. Motor vehicles more than thirty-five (35) years old are exempt from titling (as of January 1, 2012).

c. Low speed vehicles do not require a title. Low speed is defined as a four-wheeled motor vehicle with a top speed of 25 miles per hour and has a gross vehicle weight (GVWR) of less than 3,000 pounds or a neighborhood electric vehicle.

The premium you pay for an Alabama Certificate of Title Bond may be as low as $100 depending on the bond amount required and credit.

Did You Know?

You may not get an Alabama Certificate of Title for vehicles more than 35 model years old.
