Company and Agency License Requirements

Private detective and investigator companies provide many services including researching and gathering of evidence on corporate fraud, fake resume’s, background checks for employment, dating and even businesses, identity theft, infidelity, child custody and personal injury cases.  Security agencies provide crime prevention and monitoring of criminal activity services to businesses, private individuals, housing complexes and more.

To become a private detective, investigator company or security agency in Georgia, you will need to apply for a license with the Georgia Board of Private Detectives and Security Agencies.  The Board is responsible for ensuring that all applicants are qualified to offer detective and security services and that they meet the state requirements.  At least one person will need to be designated as a qualified representative or designee of the company or agency and will be responsible for all of the company/agency operations as well as be registered with the Board.

Applicants applying for as a Private Detective or Investigator Company license will need to have at least two years of experience as a licensed private detective with a detective agency, or two years law enforcement experience, or a four year college degree in criminal justice.

Applicants applying for a Security Agency license will need to have at least two years of experience as administrator or supervisor of an in-house security agency, or two years law enforcement experience, or a four year college degree in criminal justice.

The qualified designated applicant as well as any employees will need to be fingerprinted and pass criminal background checks.  Further, each employee will need to be registered and apply for a weapons permit every other year.

In addition to the application, there is a $25,000 surety bond requirement.  The bond ensures that the detective, investigator company or security agency complies with all state laws and regulations and protects the public from negligent acts. Or applicants can obtain a general liability policy of a minimum of $1,000,000 or provide evidence in the form of financial statements of at least $50,000 in net worth.

Licenses for an agency or company are valid for two years and expire on June 30 of odd years.
